Embedded Live 2010
ByteSnap Design has developed the control board for the Autosub Long Range, an autonomous underwater vehicle which can dive to 6,000 meters. The control board will be on display at the ByteSnap Design stand 341 at Embedded Live 2010 on the 20th & 21st October, Earls Court, London. Also on display will be demos of ByteSnap Design’s SnapUI v2.0, which offers new features including camera controls and XML-driven UI design as well as serial and socket-based connectivity.
Autosub Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
The National Oceanography Centre’s Autosub Long Range mission management board was developed by ByteSnap Design. Working with Direct Insight, ByteSnap Design developed the board, which hosts a TRITON-270 single board computer and supports six NOCS developed control module circuit cards. The board is based on the Triton Starter kit 3 development system for Direct Insight’s Triton-270 single board computer (PXA270).
The mission control board enables the Autosub Long Range to make long-duration dives (up to six months) at depths of 6,000 meters on a minimal amount of power. The target missions include the identification and measurement of water temperature, currents, breaking waves and hydrothermal vents.
The National Oceanography Centre set the challenging target for reducing power consumption from 150 watts to 1 watt, and ByteSnap Design’s work played an important role in achieving that target.

- Addition of multi window support for desktop applications.
- Non rectangular windows supported for integration with 3rd party running applications or splash screens.
- Additional XML features added to control screen behaviour without the need for code changes to the engine.
- New screen effects such as sliding, blend etc. when navigating the UI.
- Support for the engine to change the window size based on XML values (primarily used for desktop applications).
- Grouping of UI controls to allow simpler hide/show of a number of screen objects.
- Communications support for quick and simple serial and socket based interconnectivity development.
- Embedded JPG and XML for systems with these components as part of the OS.
- Additional UI components:
- Scroll bars
- Drop down boxes
- Camera controls
- Item group controls
